Griffiths Training Child Volunteers Information

West End: 10- 11 September 2026

One of our psychologists, Dr Tania Pomario, is running a course to train paediatricians and psychologists on the use of the Griffiths III, a developmental assessment tool, on the 10th and 11th of September 2026 in conjunction with a clinical neuropsychologist, Laura Jellins.

We are reaching out to parents of young children, who do not necessarily have any major concerns about their children's development, but who are interested in obtaining a better understanding of how their child is tracking in terms of their development to ask if you would like to volunteer to take part in the training program.

We require child volunteers between the ages of 8 months and 5 years as part of our training program.

Please note that as this assessment is for training purposes, we cannot assess children with any major developmental concerns. If you have concerns about your child’s development, please contact us for a clinical assessment.

Why do we need your assistance?

The Griffiths III is a tool that allows for the assessment of child development in young children (from birth to age 6). It assesses various aspects of child development including:

1. Thinking and memory skills

2. Language and communication skills

3. Fine motor skills (e.g., those skills that are important to prepare young children to learn to write)

4. Gross motor skills such as strength and agility

5. Social-emotional skills (e.g., ability to do daily tasks with some independence in line with age expectations, ability to establish and maintain relationships with other children, and ability regulate emotions)

The trainees on the course are all psychologists or paediatricians who have a good background knowledge in child development, but who would like to become accredited to use the Griffiths III assessment tool. Having the opportunity to practice the test on typically developing children while under supervision is essential to the development of their skills and to prepare them to use the tool with children who may have developmental difficulties or delay.

What will be required of you and your child if you decide to participate:

• You will be contacted telephonically for a brief (30min) interview prior to the assessment in order to obtain some background information on your child and any concerns you may have regarding their development and behaviour.

• Your child's assessment will then be scheduled for either the 10th or 11th of September 2026 and will take about 2 hours if your child is over the age of 2 years and 1 hour if they are younger.

• The assessment will take place at Pathways Health and Research, Unit 7, 88 Boundary Street, West End, Brisbane.  Paid parking is available on Boundary Street at Cornerstone Parking – behind the venue (you will be reimbursed for your parking fee). 

• Your child will be assessed by a group of 3 clinicians who will rotate to complete all the tasks.

• You will be with your child at all times.

• Please bring a snack and water bottle for your child. Your child will be offered short breaks during the assessment if and when required.

What will you receive:

• Your child will receive a small gift to thank them for their time.

• You will receive a short report detailing the findings from the assessment.

• If the assessment identifies any areas of concern, you will be contacted for a follow up session to discuss any recommendations the assessment team may have to support your child's development.
