Children's assessments

The purpose of an assessment is to identify your child’s areas of strength and weakness and to provide specific recommendations around what supports they might need.

Assessments may include interviews with parents and other stakeholders, meeting your child and asking them questions, playing and completing specific tasks with your child, observations of your child at home or school, consulting with your child’s teacher and/or asking you and other stakeholders to complete questionnaires about your child.

We use gold standard diagnostic assessments and provide detailed reports with thorough recommendations to schools, parents and other treatment providers.

School readiness assessment

Knowing whether your child is ready for Prep can prove to be a difficult decision. Not only must children be academically ready for the transition, but they also must possess adequate social and emotional skills to support them to successfully develop relationships with their peers and teachers.   We understand these challenges that parents commonly face and can help you make an informed decision for your child based on their individual needs, through our school readiness assessment package.

In some cases, children are deemed eligible to commence their schooling earlier than usually required (early entry to Prep). A school readiness assessment can also be useful in determining whether this is an option for your child.

Further information about early school entry requirements can be found on the Queensland Department of Education website.

A School Readiness Assessment typically includes:

  1. Parent interview to review your child’s educational and developmental history, and to ensure the school readiness assessment is appropriate.

  2. Administration of a standardised cognitive assessment (WPPSI-IV), and distribution of questionnaires assessing the child’s behaviour and skills to parents/kindy teachers.

  3. A detailed report with tailored recommendations for your child.

  4. Parent feedback session (30 minutes).

  5. A Letter to the Queensland Department of Education to support early school entry – if eligible.

The process:

  1. An initial consultation (1 x 50 minute parent only session) with the Psychologist.

  2. Where a School Readiness Assessment is deemed suitable and appropriate for your child, the School Readiness Assessment package includes:

    • A 2-hour assessment session for the child with the Psychologist (mornings preferred)

    • A tailored report written by the Psychologist

    • 1 x 30-minute parent only feedback session with the Child Psychologist (2 weeks after the final assessment session)
